August 30, 2022Japanese Wooden Boat Building; Documenting a Disappearing Craft
August 30, 2022Adding to our growing list of Tall Ships has been easy for the upcoming 2023 event, with Tall Ship crew’s itching to venture further after the last few years of confinement. We are delighted to announce Young Endeavour and Enterprize are joining the fleet for 2023.
Tall Ships are a huge part of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival. Sailing from various parts of the country, it’s a big highlight of the event when they take part in the Parade of Sail opening event of the AWBF. Watch stunning tall ships lead a fleet of wooden boats, of various sizes and shapes up the River Derwent to Sullivan’s Cove. The event kicks off four-days of celebrations of maritime culture and communities.
Young Endeavour
Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour
Since 1988, more than 14,000 young Australians aged 16-23 have joined STS Young Endeavour on a life-changing voyage youth development voyage. 24 youth from across Australia make up the youth crew and together these new crew mates learn how to sail the ship. The youth crew don’t have access to their phones or social media, allowing them to focus on their rapid introduction to life at sea. They learn how to keep watch on deck, to handle lines, take the helm, navigate using the ship’s electronic charts, assist the chef in the galley and climb the 30-metre mast to set and furl sails – all while developing confidence, resilience and leadership skills. Towards the end of each voyage they also elect their own leadership team and take command of the ship for 24 hours, putting everything they have learned into practice.
Young Endeavour is the bicentenary gift from Great Britain to Australia. The ship is operated by the Royal Australian Navy and has been delivering youth development voyages since 1988. The 44 metre ship is brigantine rigged, with two masts and more than 740 square metres of sail (ten sails). Young Endeavour has sailed more than 500,000 nautical miles, including four circumnavigations of Australia and two world voyages.
Applications are now open for 2023 voyages sailing from January – June 2023 and can be made online: https://youngendeavour.gov.au
Tours of Young Endeavour may be available before, during and after AWBF.
