Jumping onboard this month was Old Woolstore, who are partnering with AWBF to present the Little Sailors Village. Traditionally known as the VIP Kids zone, or the Children’s Area, Parliament House Lawns will take on a new name this coming Festival, Little Sailors Village.
Imagine wandering around Hobart’s splendid waterfront with a forest of tall ship masts as a backdrop and coming across a crew of ‘pirates’ singing sea shanties. Or maybe a dramatised re-enactment of the glory days when a Tassie yacht regularly whopped Australia’s finest contenders to win the coveted Albert Gold and Forster Cups in a period spanning over 25 years.
If you have small sailors with you, imagine the delight of exploring the Old Woolstore Little Sailors Village where all sorts of activities and entertainments are provided to expand the minds of the young and entertain their more-senior ship-mates.
My First Boat Kits & Heron Hospital
Visit the ‘Heron Hospital’ to view and be part of the restoration and maintenance program of iconic sailing dinghies and view the My First Boat contingent; a team of budding young yachtsmen and women building their very first rowing boat. Kits are available online www.awbf.org.au and we hope to grow the fleet each festival. A perfect opportunity for young and old to get into the wooden boat world.
Polyglot’s BOATS
Polyglot Theatre is a world-renowned contemporary theatre company based in Melbourne. For this Festival, they’re bringing their adventurous Place Space for children of all ages to the Old Woolstore Little Sailors Village, which is inspired by the stories of children who have experienced journeys across the sea. An interactive, hilarious journey engaging families and children.
Little Sailors Village Activities
Join the volunteers from the Wood Craft Guild and build your own little wooden boats, to race around our pop up pool. Keep the kids amused and entertained with the ever famous circus skills workshop, designed to get the kids ‘learning the ropes’.
The story of TASSIE – theatre show
For nearly 200 years the slip yards of Battery Point have produced some of the finest craft to sail Australian waters, but there isn’t a more exciting story than the creation of the yacht Tassie, back in 1925.
Local boat builder Charlie Lucas and renowned designer and sailor “Skipper” Batt, threw together a challenger for the prestigious Forster Cup and created history on the Derwent. The Story of Tassie tells how the ‘Butterbox’ fared against the aristocrats of Australia’s 21’ yachts, in the national blue ribbon event of the day.
It’s an inspiring story of vision, craftsmanship and skill at the helm. The play is presented to you by Big Monkey Theatre, written and directed by Les Winspear and features some of Hobart’s top acting talent.
