May 23, 2022Spirit of Tasmania backs iconic AWBF events
June 23, 2022It will be four years since the Tall Ships graced the waters of the River Derwent, but they’re coming back! The AWBF is ecstatic to announce that Soren Larsen is the first Tall Ship to confirm they are heading south early next year for the AWBF 2023!
The 1949 Brigantine build in Northern Denmark will depart its home port of Sydney on the 31st January 2023 to head to Hobart for the AWBF. The voyaging Tall Ship has circumnavigated the globe twice. She was the Flagship of the First Fleet Re-enactment, celebrating Australia’s Bicentennial in 1988. Soren Larsen also attended the 2013 Tall Ships Festival hosted by AWBF, and the AWBF in 2019.
Importantly, AWBF is delighted to announce the two masted square rigger will offer day sailings and evening sails during the AWBF 2023.
Soren Larsen was designed and built by Soren Larsen & Sons and carried general cargo in the Baltic for more than 20 years. Gutted by fire in 1972, she was restored not long after. In 2011 she came to Australia permanently. She is famous for featuring in several films, including The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Onedin Line and Shackleton.
The ship was one of the original Jubilee Sailing Trust vessels. Now she can be seen on Sydney Harbour.
