November 20, 2016Gardner Celebration at AWBF 2017
Reliable, economical and admired the world over, Gardner diesels have been powering trains, buses and boats since 1903. They were even used by the Royal Navy in early submarines!
These slow revving engines were manufactured in Manchester, England up to the mid 1990s when European design rules required a total redesign. Sadly the decision was made to close the plant.
Realising that a big opportunity existed for rebuilding engines and supplying parts, Gardner staff formed their own companies to service the many engines in operation around the globe. Consequently there is an ongoing supply of genuine parts available.
Gardner marine diesel engines are still in regular service around the world, and many propel boats to the AWBF here in Tasmania each two years. (As a special this festival, we are expecting a polished 4LW to be on display!)
In fact the engines are outlasting the Gardner specialist mechanics, many of whom are retiring. This presents an opportunity for a younger marine diesel mechanic to learn from the old hands and continue servicing Gardners.
A get together during the festival is being planned to celebrate these engines. This will give an opportunity to meet other owners and possibly form a community for parts and information. Depending on interest, a venue and time will be arranged.
