Peter Higgs is a Hobart boat owner and wooden boat enthusiast. He’s on the Wooden Boat Guild committee, is a project manager for the Terra Linna restoration and is Vice Chair of the AWBF Inc. And if that’s not enough wooden boat activity, Peter has two of his own!

Seaspray – LOA 29′, Beam 8′, Draft 3′.
TO: Peter this makes two (more) wooden boats you are looking after. What can you tell us about them?
PH: Seaspray is a motor launch previously known as Pandora. She was built in 1926 possibly at Woods Shipyard in Launceston and is carvel built with a round bilge.
Seaspray has a straight stem, moderate sheer, and tuck stern, trunk cabin, a higher cabin aft, cockpit and cockpit seats, with steering and engine controls port forward in the cockpit. The planking is Huon Pine on steam bent frames, hardwood keel, floor frames and deck framing. The deck and cabin tops appear to be tongue and grooved pine and sheathed on top.
After being owned by the Mersey Marine Board, Pandora was then owned by a Bank Manager who brought her down to Hobart. The Bank Manager sold her to a Melvyn Dalwood of Lindisfarne who changed the name to Seaspray. Mr Dalwood fell overboard and drowned in 1958 and she was sold to a Robert Knight who owned her for 40 years until his death in 1998. His daughter Julie Kirk took ownership until 2009 when I bought her.
She is vessel number HV000333 on the Register of Australian Historic Vessels.
We use her locally in the Derwent and down the Channel where we have a mooring in Barnes Bay.
I chose to moor her at Prince of Wales Bay Marina because it is central to Hobart, in a very well established marine and boat building precinct that dates back to the 1800’s and the marina is a delight to be around.

Shipright LOA 42′, Beam 12’10”, Draft 5′
PH: Yes, a great cruiser called Shipright recently came up and I couldn’t resist. She’s a Ray Kemp design, built in 1993 by Kevin Argent of Devonport. Her hull is 1 3/4″ Huon Pine carvel planked, the decks are laid Huon Pine and she weighs 20 tonnes.
We will use Shipright out of PoW Bay for Derwent, Channel and other SE and SW cruising.
TO: Two boats take some looking after. Why did you choose PoW Marina?
PH: The marina’s infrastructure is great and well maintained with facilities for both live-aboard and local patrons. Security is first class with the marina being locked up and with security patrols. I also like their flexible rental agreements.

PH: The PoW Bay marine precinct is home to many trades and services that can be of benefit to both local and visiting sailors. These include Clean Lift for slipping boats of all sizes on the hard stand for maintenance. There are too many to mention but all marine trades and services are covered.
During the recent 2015 Australian Wooden Boat Festival PoW Bay Marina hosted many interstate yachties who sailed to Hobart for the Festival and cruising time before and after the Festival. They were very impressed with the flexible berthing arrangements and local marine services in Prince of Wales Bay.
