Meet the Crew – August 2026
August 26, 2026

Muir’s reputation is built on the hard work of John Muir, who grew up in the portside suburb of Battery Point. Hailing from a long line of seafarers and shipwrights, John was destined for a career in the marine industry. It was while working alongside his father Jock in the family boatbuilding business that he developed the very first Muir anchor winches, born out of necessity and a deep practical understanding of what a vessel truly demands from its deck hardware.

It was here that Jock passed on the philosophy that still defines Muir today:
“Make sure the winch you design and build is stronger than the deck it’s bolted down to.”
– Jock Muir, to his son John Muir
That single piece of advice became a founding principle, one that has guided every winch, windlass and capstan to leave the Muir workshop since. Today, the team remains committed to honouring that founding vision at its Tasmanian production facility, building on decades of hands-on experience to craft anchoring systems for a wide range of vessels.
From 5-metre vessels to some of the world’s largest megayachts, Muir products are trusted around the globe across recreational, megayacht, commercial and defence applications, including offshore patrol vessels. Backed by a global network of experienced sales and service teams and an international distribution network, Muir supplies anchoring systems and spares for vessels of all sizes.
To this day, Muir remains an Australian, family-owned business, still guided by the same standard Jock Muir set for his son on the Battery Point waterfront all those years ago.
Muir Anchoring Systems at AWBF 2027
That history will come full circle at AWBF 2027, with Muir Anchoring Systems joining us as Program Partner of the Shipwrights Village.
It’s a fitting partnership for a Tasmanian company whose story began on the Battery Point waterfront and continues today through marine design, manufacturing and craftsmanship. We’re looking forward to welcoming the Muir team to the festival and sharing more of their story with visitors in February.
